Baby Cut, 2018

Live performance; 3 hours, Washburn Gallery, Eugene OR

Baby carrots (or “baby cut” carrots) are a designed food, machine-whittled down from pieces of irregularly shaped carrots. Like tiny orange sculptures, the polished ovoid forms assume a standard size and diminutive name, “baby”, allowing for easy packaging and marketing, but revealing little of their identity as plants. During the performance, I whittled baby carrots by hand in the gallery and offered them up to viewers to eat, inviting them to “chew on” baby carrots as both food and idea. The rote and prolonged task opened up space to consider what ideas, histories and technologies we consume along with edible matter. We shape our food and surely it shapes us.
